Kevin Curran is a Reader in Computer Science and group leader for the Ambient Intelligence Research Group at Ulster University in Northern Ireland. Dr Curran has made significant contributions to advancing the knowledge of computer networking evidenced by over 800 published works. He is a regular contributor to BBC radio & TV news in the UK and is an IEEE Technical Expert for Security and a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College.

He has a unique knowledge of the mobile industry ranging from technical challenges to the commercial opportunities for brands to succeed in mobile. Prior to founding Somo, Carl was co-founder at Overture Europe, the company to pioneer the multi-billion dollar pay-per-click advertising industry into Europe. As CTO, he was integral in leading the business to success in 15 European countries, and its eventual sale to Yahoo! for $1.63 billion in 2003. A leader in search and social networking, he was headhunted to the Silicon Valley, where he created the Yahoo! One Search mobile platform, working with some of the world’s largest mobile brands.

James is a British technology success story. In 1989 he founded Moonstone Technology, where he developed the first ever LCD touchscreen display.

His book 'Are The Androids Dreaming Yet?' concerns the limitations of computers in a Free Will universe and whether they will completely surpass us in intelligence or be limited by what they lack in creativity.

James is coFounder and CTO of Truphone, a company that started in 2001 on a farm in Kent where James struggled to get good mobile coverage, and so decided to tackle the problem himself. James invented a mobile phone SIM card that allows users to operate different phone numbers from a single device. Since then London based Truphone has grown from a Skype-style internet calling service into a global mobile network without country borders. It operates across 220+ countries and employs over 750 people worldwide. Truphone provides a cost-effective international mobile service for businesses and consumers, and today founder James still holds the role of Chief Technology Officer.
