Dr. Leo Anthony Celi on Improving eHealth in resource-limited environments
Dr. Leo Anthony Celi, clinical research director for the Laboratory of Computational Physiology at MIT, gives an overview of the challenges faced and insights gained through the eHealth for resource-limited settings project. Dr. Celi then explains how the shortage of health data prevents the improvement of care in developing countries with limited resources. Our talk then moves into how technology is been leveraged in a research project led by Dr. Celi at the MIT in order to collect health data, create actionable metrics and ultimately improve and optimize healthcare. We finally discuss some of the key issue such as privacy and the benefits of using open source software during the project. Interviewed by TTC’s George Voulgaris.

Dr Leo Anthony Celi is an internist, an intensivist, and an infectious disease specialist, who has practiced medicine in 3 continents, giving him broad perspectives in healthcare delivery. In addition, he pursued a master’s degree in biomedical informatics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a master’s degree in public health at Harvard University. He founded and directs Sana at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT. He currently holds a faculty position at Harvard Medical School as an intensivist at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and is the clinical research director for the Laboratory of Computational Physiology at MIT. Finally, he is one of the course directors for HST.936 at MIT – health information systems to improve quality of care in resource-poor settings (http://bit.ly/rvFoVp).

The eHealth Forum 2014 brought together a High-Level eHealth Experts’ Conference on European Priorities, the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP AHA) – incorporating events and an exhibition, a meeting of the eHealth Network, the 4th EU-US eHealth Marketplace & Cooperation Assembly, and much more. The Forum demonstrated how eHealth can further develop existing partnerships to enhance and safeguard access to care and quality of life. It showcased how ICT and innovation on a large scale in health and care systems can contribute to sustainability, economic growth and job opportunities during challenging times.
